Basketball Trainer Joel Barkers
Joel Barkers
Joel Barkers is the founder of You Reach I Teach Basketball Academy and a former Division 1 and professional basketball player whose journey has run through some of the most competitive environments in the game. A Washington, D.C. native, Joel came up through DeMatha Catholic and Mt. Zion Christian Academy, the powerhouse program that produced NBA players Tracy McGrady, Amare Stoudemire, Jarrett Jack, and Brandon Rush. Those environments gave him more than exposure. They taught him what it takes to compete, adjust, endure pressure, and keep developing when the expectations around you are high.
From there, Joel earned everything. At Kirkwood Community College, the 6-foot-6 forward averaged a double-double, 10.3 points and 10.3 rebounds a game, with rebounding numbers that ranked 18th in the nation. That season earned him his Division 1 scholarship to the University of Hartford, where he built a reputation for toughness, production, and relentless work on the glass, and he closed his college career at the University of Central Missouri.
As a professional, Joel’s career spanned Greece, Germany, England, and China, along with the NBA D-League. In England he appeared in 19 games for the London Lions and suited up for the Cheshire Phoenix in the British Basketball League. In 2013 he earned a spot on the Denver Nuggets’ NBA Summer League roster in Las Vegas, appearing in three games and spending time in the team’s training camp environment.
Today, Joel pours everything he learned as a player back into the next generation through You Reach I Teach Basketball Academy. The work is about more than basketball training. It is mentorship, discipline, confidence, teamwork, and character, helping young athletes grow as people while they grow in the game. On the court, Joel develops shooting, ball-handling, footwork, rebounding, defense, and basketball IQ. Off the court, he gives athletes something rarer: access to someone who has lived the journey, seen the levels, and understands both the opportunity and the pressure that come with chasing basketball dreams.
Joel has been overlooked, recruited, signed, and paid to play. He knows what college recruiters look for because he earned his own scholarship the hard way, and he knows what professional preparation demands because it was his job. He is not just teaching athletes how to play. He is helping them understand how to grow, how to compete, and how to carry themselves beyond the game.
