Basketball Positions Explained
Coaches often call positions by number, from 1 to 5. The numbers give each player a starting job, but the best players learn more than one role. Here is what each position does.
What Are the 5 Positions in Basketball?
- Point guard (the 1)
- Shooting guard (the 2)
- Small forward (the 3)
- Power forward (the 4)
- Center (the 5)
Guards usually play farther from the basket and handle the ball more. Forwards and centers usually play closer to the basket and rebound more.
Point Guard (1)
The point guard brings the ball up the court and starts the offense. A good point guard dribbles with both hands, sees the whole floor, makes smart passes and talks to teammates. On defense, the point guard usually guards the other team’s main ball handler.
Shooting Guard (2)
The shooting guard is often the team’s best outside shooter. This player moves without the ball, uses screens to get open and scores from the three-point line and mid-range. A shooting guard also helps the point guard bring the ball up against pressure.
Small Forward (3)
The small forward is the most flexible position. This player can shoot from outside, drive to the basket, rebound and guard many types of players. Many of the game’s best all-around players are small forwards.
Power Forward (4)
The power forward plays near the basket on both ends. This player sets screens, rebounds, scores close to the rim and often takes mid-range shots. Strong footwork and boxing out are key skills.
Center (5)
The center is usually the tallest player. The center protects the rim on defense, grabs rebounds, sets screens and scores close to the basket. Modern centers often pass well and some shoot from outside too.
Should Young Players Pick One Position?
Not too early. Players grow and change, and today’s game rewards players who can dribble, pass and shoot from any spot. This is the idea behind positionless basketball. At You Reach I Teach Basketball Academy, we train every player in ball handling, passing, shooting and defense, so they are ready for whatever role their team needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What position is best for a short player?
Most shorter players start at point guard or shooting guard, where ball handling, speed and shooting matter more than height.
What does the point guard do?
The point guard brings the ball up, calls the play and gets the ball to teammates in good spots to score.
Is the center always the tallest player?
Usually, but not always. The center’s job is to protect the rim and rebound, so strength, timing and positioning matter as much as height.
